John Fleetwood is the convener for democraSEE – an award and mentorship programme for Southern African photographers. Fleetwood is the curator for “Of traps and tropes” at the Kerkennah Photography Festival (Jun 2018). He previously curated ‘Cities and Memory’ as part of the Photo Biennale in Denmark (2016), ‘Against Time’ an exhibition of emerging photographers (Bamako Encounters, 2015).
He co-commissioned ‘A Return to Elsewhere’, a collaborative photography project on communities and dis/connect, between Kalpesh Lathigra (UK) and Thabiso Sekgala (SA) for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2014 and the Joburg Photo Umbrella 2014. He was the co-curator for ‘Transition’ – a collaboration between 6 South African and 6 French photographers about South African land and the role that photography continues to play in the representation and re-imagining of this land (Johannesburg, 2012 & Rencontres d’Arles, 2013).
In 2017 Fleetwood was guest editor for Aperture’s Platform Africa edition. Fleetwood was the Head of the Market Photo Workshop from 2002-2015. He works closely with the Centres of Learning for Photography in Africa and other institutions of learning and mentorship. He was born and is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
