FRANCE PHOTOBOOK
France PhotoBook unites the main French independent publishers of photography books and currently brings together 30 publishing houses located throughout France.
Supported by the French Ministry of Culture, the association aims to ensure that photography books are recognised as a publishing field in their own right, and to promote publishing of creative photography in France and abroad.
André Frère Éditions
Created in 2013 André Frère Éditions, produces between 6 and 8 titles per year and publishes renowned photographers, but its vocation is also to discover new talents.
With each new release, we try to reach readers who are looking for the exceptional book, both by the choice of photographers published and by the design and diversity of manufacturing methods that make each book a unique object.
Atelier EXB
Atelier EXB publishes books taking a visual approach to the new shapes of photography, contemporary art and sciences. Founded in 2002 by Xavier Barral, and taken over in 2020 by the five members of the team l’équipe (Jordan Alves, Nathalie Chapuis, Yseult Chehata, Charlotte Debiolles et Perrine Somma), the publishing house conceives each book where style and content meet to tell a singular history. Raising curiosity through the image and bringing one to discover new artistic voices, subjects in resonance with today’s world. What the photographic image says of our world?
Aesthetic choices and editorial content take pride of place, conceived in close relationship with major figures of the artistic scene as well as more emerging talents to create astonishing publications where different points of views meet between artists and authors from around the world.
To date, the catalogue lists over 200 critically acclaimed titles.

La Maison de Z
Founded in 2015, La Maison de Z is a publishing house specializing in visual art and a platform covering various interests, including contemporary photography and independent publications. We see publishing as a way of research to explore the intricate interplay between memory and reality. From concept to design, from visual image to material, we’ve been persistently challenging the boundaries of paper as a vehicle while examining the essence of art books as a media language.
Rue du bouquet
An independent publishing house created in 2016 by Samantha Millar Hoppe, Rue du bouquet is dedicated to the creation of photography books, in close collaboration with photographers, graphic designers and authors.
Each book, born from the desire to highlight the work of the chosen photographers, is designed as a singular object with assertive graphics, and testifies to an editorial approach which favors meetings between artists.
Light Motiv
Founded in 2011 by Eric Le Brun, Light Motiv is an independent publisher specialized in photobooks based in Lille, France. The editorial intention navigates between a documentary and an imaginary approach while exploring text-image resonances. Our books tackle contemporary issues, such as environment, territories, identities, and the visible and invisible transformations taking place in both individuals and societies. Each story resides at the crossroads of languages putting personal experiences into perspective with collective social narratives.
SCANDINAVIAN PUBLISHERS
Breadfield Press
Breadfield Press is a Malmö-based independent publishing house. The focus of Breadfield Press is most often on smaller projects. They do not restrict themselves to specific themes or areas but explore the field between photography and the book as an entity. They are particularly interested in multilayered works, projects with solid foundations in strong ‘stories’ but with unique attitudes. They are also the founder and caretaker of the Landskrona Foto & Breadfield Dummy Award. Their titles are distributed worldwide and offered through numerous book fairs and other specialist photobook events around the world.”
Blackbook Publications
Blackbook Publications is a publisher and an artist collective, established in Gothenburg in 2009. Since the start, they have published books and other printed material by interesting artists from the Scandinavian scene of contemporary photography. Blackbook Publications has published about 30 books of widely varying nature. Their idea is to publish books that are not just a printed version of a work, but a work of its own in itself. Blackbook Publications members have received many fine awards and shown their work at major institutions around Sweden and the world.
Disko Bay
Disko Bay, founded in 2018, is an independent photobook publisher based in Copenhagen. Sailor Press
Sailor Press aims to offer an alternative to publishing restricted by the constraints of institutions or larger publishers. In close dialogue and collaboration with the artists we develop publications that explore the artist’s work as well as the book as a medium. The content of the book and the book as object are equally important. Sailor Press is founded and run by book designer Matilda Plöjel, and wishes to explore the field between art and graphic design
