Sitting halfway between reality and its replication, Studio immerses us in illusion and trompe-l’œil, testing how accurate our perception might be. At first glance, the images appear to show an artists’ studio, that of the German-Swiss duo Cortis & Sonderegger, with its clutter of everyday objects. Yet, suddenly, perspective shifts—large objects appear small, and small objects appear impossibly big. In Studio, Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger play a sophisticated game with the authenticity of photography, blurring the boundaries between the genuine and the fake.

Cortis & Sonderegger built a detailed model of their workspace near Zurich, complete with much of its furnishings, and photographed it extensively. These images turn our viewing experience upside down and invite a closer look. The artists’ play with reality becomes visible on multiple levels: the view from the model’s window shows the real studio space, proportions appear strangely distorted, and occasionally, the artists themselves appear as protagonists.

In a world flooded with images every day, Cortis & Sonderegger’s Open Studio exhibition offers a thoughtful counterpoint to the latest developments in photography and artificial intelligence-based image generation.

Jojakim Cortis (b. 1978, Germany) and Adrian Sonderegger (b. 1980, Switzerland) have lived in Zurich since 2001. Both studied photography at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK), graduating in 2006. Cortis gained experience in studios in Germany and the USA, while Sonderegger worked as assistant to artist Jules Spinach and taught at ZHDK.

Their collaboration began during their teaching and continues today. They have exhibited internationally, including at the Metropolitan Museum (NY), Museum Folkwang (Essen), Fotostiftung Schweiz, and C/O Berlin, and at festivals across Europe and China. Their book Double Take (2018) was published in English, German, and Japanese.

© Cortis & Sonderegger, 2021-06-16, from the series “Studio”, photography, 2021.

This exhibition was realised with the generous support of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia

LOCATION: Landskrona Foto, Kavallerigatan 4 DATE 14.3.-26.7. 2026. OPENING HOURS: Thursday- Sunday noon- 5pm.
