Gardens offer a fantastic way to understand the strong and ever-changing relationship between humans and nature. For a long time, knowledge of horticulture has had a significant impact on our society and culture, while also contributing to technological development. However, in recent years, as technology has become a bigger part of our lives, many people have become more disconnected from nature. This has led to a growing lack of understanding of natural processes and ancient skills like horticulture.
“The Ignorant Gardener” is a photographic project inspired by various artistic styles, such as Constructivism, Ready-Made, and Surrealism. By combining sculpture and photography, the project creates images that defy conventional logic and challenge us to think about horticulture in new ways. The project also highlights how little contemporary generations know about this ancient craft.
In the project, photographer Yurian Quintanas Nobel creates temporary sculptures using objects commonly found in a vegetable garden—such as vegetables, tools, and other farming implements. These elements are arranged in unexpected ways, focusing on their appearance rather than their function. The sculptures are created on-site, with the garden landscape serving as the backdrop. Once the images are taken, each object is returned to its original place.
Each image is accompanied by a caption that mimics the style often used in gardening books and catalogues, but with a surreal twist that enhances the project’s message.
