Nature of Play is an exhibition that has come from the collaboration of artist Róisín White with children from Landskrona. It is the result of several workshops facilitated by Róisín during her residency with Landskrona Foto in the Spring of 2023.
The aim of the project was to view the city through the eyes of the young people who live here. During the workshops Róisín and the children spent time in nature, visiting and exploring locations that were interesting or important to the children. They showed Róisín things that she might not have paid attention to, they shared memories of those places, and together they documented the locations using photography. The children were encouraged to experiment with their cameras, to look really closely, to take their time, and to have fun while making their photographs. The assignment was completely open, they could photograph anything that they wanted to. What resulted was over 1300 photographs by the children, that embody the playful nature in which they were created.
To guide the creation of this exhibition, following the workshops Róisín and the children discussed all the images, how people were attracted to photographing certain things, or how some were made in a very individual ways (like putting their camera under water!). The children shared their ideas for how they would like the exhibition to be organised, how they would like to feel in the space, and some of the images that they really wanted to be included.
Throughout the process of facilitating the photo workshops, Róisín was making her own photographs that responded to the conversations and experiences that she was having with the children. She created a series of images that reflect some of these moments of play, while also attempting to remember how to play like she did when she was their age. Many of the locations photographed include places that the children said were their favourites but weren’t possible to visit during our workshops.
Róisín White is a visual artist and arts facilitator based in Ireland. She primary works with photography, with a diverse interest within mixed media sculpture.
