Once again Landsrona was transformed into a bustling photo hub, with art photography not only taking over galleries and museums but also urban spaces such as parks and the city streets. This is when Landskrona’s commitment and investment in photography really springs to life.

Landskrona Foto Festival was organised for the eighth time by Landskrona Foto, which since 2013 has been a collective organisation for exhibitions, events, photo books and residency activities.

Over the years Landskrona Foto Festival has established itself as Sweden’s most important photography festival and also gained international recognition. The 2022 exhibition programme was once again created by the artistic director, Monica Allende. She has previously worked as photography editor for The Sunday Times Magazine and as a curator for Britain’s largest photography festival Format 17 and the international festival Getxo Photo in Spain.

Photography, who is it for? That was the question we set out to explore with the 2022 festival. Monica Allende wanted to reflect on photography’s possibilities to influence positive change in society. The 33 international artists from 19 different countries embraced the theme and used Landskrona’s majestic historical buildings and open spaces to take us on a journey of visual exploration, using mixed formats to narrate a diversity of topics.

To pay attention to Landskrona Fotos large photo book collection we turned our old gymnastic hall into a centre for photo books. In collaboration with Svenska Fotografernas Förbund, Centrum för fotografi, HDK-Valand and others, we invited artists to present and discuss how photographic literature is made accessible. The aim was to increase the distribution of photo books and the knowledge of how to “read” photographic publications.

The last couple of years were marked by restrictions and social distancing, but once again Landskrona Foto Festival showed the power of bringing together artists and the viewing public, sparking lively and engaging debates. Not only about the photography that took over our city but about the wider social and political tensions which are at the heart of the stories these artists are telling.
