“We made an impromptu stop in a small border town in Nevada. Branford Marsalis Quartet was playing Hope, and it made me pull over and take a few photographs by the roadside. I needed to pee and wandered off behind the car without much hesitation. You seemed genuinely surprised by my spontaneity. Then again, we didn’t know each other very well yet.
A few minutes later, we realized we had stopped at a machine-gun shooting range. We got back into the car and drove away considerably faster than we had arrived.”
Hanna Mattes grew up in a family of filmmakers and theatre makers and has long been fascinated by the relationship between fiction and reality. Before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2006, she studied linguistics, religious studies, and Indian philology. Through her artistic practice, she explores storytelling, mysticism, and the interplay between fiction and reality. She lives and works in Berlin.
