A Way Away – Swedish Photographers Abroad 1862–2018

7 June 2018 – 27 January 2019 at Landskrona Museum

It is time for the next exhibition of historical photography in Landskrona. Having reflected the role of photography in science in 2016 and showcased the art of portraiture in 2017, we now come to A WAY AWAY – Swedish Photographers Explore the World 1850–2000, where the ambition is to show how Swedish photographers set off to observe the world through their camera lens.

Exhibited here are pictorial histories born of curiosity, passion, worship, chance, conviction, duty, compulsion and the urge to study. The photographers were there – sometimes purely by chance, sometimes after singleminded and arduous journeys of thousands of miles. Sometimes they stayed away for a night, sometimes for months on end, sometimes for the rest of their lives.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Nordic Museum in Stockholm.

Last year, HD’s photography award was introduced to support significant photojournalism. One reason was that, on Sweden’s hundreds of national newspapers, there are only thirty employees of press photographers today. It is no wonder that the few that appear in today’s climate are often incredibly driven photographers. Alexander Mahmoud (born 1990) is perhaps the most exciting. He who dares to use himself, his background and his deep personal experience to tell something essential about the world. This year’s jury – consisting of Åsa Sjöström, Anna Gullmark and Johan Malmberg – awards him the award with the motivation: “A photographer who figuratively and literally widen worlds. With the same power as he turns the camera towards the naked private he scrupulously depicts the people who rarely are given a voice. A unique narrator, with a sensitive eye and a brave heart.

We are pleased to show some of his most exciting work in Landskrona Fotos new premises in old Tyghuset. The house, which now also holds an essential part of the photo history of Helsingborgs Dagblad, via its image archive run from Tyghuset by Bilder in Syd. In a parallel memorial exhibition we honour the long-standing HD photographer Roland Bengtsson.

Opening hours: Mon – Fri  14-18/1 between 12-15, Mon – Fri 21-25/1 between 12-16
